India Women Struggle in T20I Series Opener Against South Africa

In a disappointing start to their T20 World Cup preparations, India Women faced a six-wicket loss against South Africa in the first match of the T20I series on Friday, April 17, at Kingsmead in Durban. Despite having several scoring chances, lapses in fielding and ineffective batting during the final overs ultimately let the team down.

After winning the toss and opting to bat first, the Indian team began strong with Shafali Verma and Smriti Mandhana putting together a quick 46-run partnership in just five overs. Shafali was particularly explosive, scoring 34 runs off 20 balls, although she had a lucky break when Sune Luus dropped a catch. Mandhana, on the other hand, managed a modest 13 runs, including a six, before being dismissed by Ayobonga Khaka.

However, after Shafali’s dismissal by Tumi Sekhukhune, India lost crucial momentum. Harmanpreet Kaur and Jemimah Rodrigues steadied the innings, adding 39 runs in just three overs between the 11th and 13th overs. This brief resurgence had India looking to secure a total near 180, but things took a turn for the worse as they lost five wickets for only 39 runs in the last six overs. They finished at 157 for 7, with Harmanpreet remaining unbeaten on 47 runs off 33 balls, while Jemimah scored 36 off 29.

For South Africa, Khaka was the star with the ball, finishing with impressive figures of 2 for 16 in four overs.

In response, India started well by dismissing Sune Luus early thanks to Shreyanka Patil’s excellent delivery. However, Tazmin Brits and captain Laura Wolvaardt built a solid partnership, with Wolvaardt reaching her half-century off 36 balls. Together, they added 52 runs for the third wicket, giving South Africa a strong position in the chase.

India’s fielding came back to haunt them, with dropped catches proving costly. Shreyanka managed to dismiss Wolvaardt for 51 runs, briefly giving India some hope. However, a dropped catch by Renuka Singh allowed Annerie Dercksen to score 44 runs off 34 balls. Another chance was missed when Anushka Sharma dropped Chloe Tryon, who later hit a crucial six on the last ball of the match, sealing the victory for South Africa.

India will now need to regroup ahead of their next match against South Africa on Sunday, April 19, at the same venue.
