MS Dhoni Set to Return for Chennai Super Kings Amid Selection Dilemma
As MS Dhoni gears up for a potential return in the April 18 match against Sunrisers Hyderabad at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) face a tough decision regarding their team lineup. With Dhoni sidelined due to a calf injury, the team has managed to secure only two wins out of their first five games, although they seem to be finding their rhythm.
Recently, Dhoni was spotted practicing in the nets ahead of a match against Kolkata Knight Riders. However, he wasn’t included in the game, hinting that he is still on the mend.
While fans are concerned about his fitness, there’s an even bigger question for CSK: how to integrate Dhoni back into a lineup that has finally started to perform well. After a shaky start, CSK notched up consecutive wins at home, which has helped boost their confidence.
Aaron Finch, former captain of Australia and cricket analyst, noted, “CSK is usually hesitant to make changes when they are winning, and that’s a healthy mindset for the team. It instills confidence in players knowing they have consistent support.”
However, the 44-year-old Dhoni faced criticism last season for batting lower down the order, even when his finishing skills were desperately needed. CSK struggled, ending up at the bottom of the table with just four wins from 14 matches.
“Last season, he batted at number eight and chose to let others take the lead. So when he returns, it might mean a specific role for him, possibly as an Impact Player,” Finch said, referring to the situation.
Dhoni’s tendency to avoid taking on tough situations last season left CSK vulnerable during crucial moments. What was once his greatest strength has now raised eyebrows, as his performance saw him accumulate only 196 runs in 14 games at a strike rate of 135.17. For a team that has long relied on his ability to handle pressure, his recent struggles have become a significant concern.
As Dhoni inches closer to a comeback, all eyes will be on how CSK manages their roster and whether they’ll keep the momentum going with or without their star player.
