Vaishali Stays Strong in Women’s Candidates Chess Tournament

In an exciting showdown during Round 9 of the Women’s Candidates Chess Tournament, India’s R Vaishali triumphed over fellow Indian player Divya Deshmukh. This victory keeps Vaishali firmly in the running for the title, putting her on equal points with China’s Jiner Zhu at the top of the leaderboard.

Vaishali’s journey through the tournament has been impressive. Although she started slowly, her game against Divya showcased her growth and skill. After a patient opening, she gradually took control of the match, turning her advantage into a win. She now has 5.5 points from eight games, sharing the lead with Zhu as the competition heats up with five more rounds to play.

With each round, Vaishali has looked more confident and determined, shifting her strategy to push for victories. Her win over Divya not only solidifies her position but also keeps Indian hopes alive in this important tournament.

The competition remains tight at the top, with former leader Anna Muzychuk right behind, just half a point off the pace after drawing against Zhongyi Tan. Despite her loss, Divya is still in the hunt with 4.5 points, alongside Kateryna Lagno and Bibisara Assaubayeva, making the tournament wide open.

Meanwhile, in the open section, Anish Giri made waves by defeating pre-tournament favorite Fabiano Caruana, bringing his total to 5.5 points. Giri’s impressive performance has added excitement to the standings, although he still trails behind leader Javokhir Sindarov.

Sindarov continues to dominate the field, drawing against Matthias Bluebaum to secure 7 points after nine rounds. He remains in a strong position with three games left and the advantage of playing with the white pieces.

In other matches, R Praggnanandhaa had a chance to secure a win against Wei Yi but missed an opportunity to capitalize on a promising position, leaving their match ongoing.
