Montreal Protest Erupts: Demonstrators and Police Clash Amid Smoke Bomb Chaos

Trudeau Faces Criticism After Attending Concert Amid Protests

This past weekend, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau found himself in hot water after a video of him dancing at a Taylor Swift concert went viral, contrasting sharply with violent protests occurring simultaneously in Montreal.

On Friday night, Trudeau attended the concert in Toronto, nearly 280 miles from Ottawa, Canada’s capital, and over 330 miles from his home district in Montreal. In the video shared on social media platform X, Trudeau was seen enjoying himself while singing along to “You Don’t Own Me,” just before Taylor Swift took the stage.

While he danced in Toronto, anti-NATO protests erupted in Montreal, where demonstrators lit smoke bombs and marched with Palestinian flags. Reports from the Montreal Gazette noted instances of rioters setting cars on fire and clashing with police. Some protesters even threw small explosives and burned an effigy of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

The sight of Trudeau dancing while such unrest occurred in his hometown drew swift backlash online, with some users likening him to Roman Emperor Nero, who was famously said to have “fiddled while Rome burned.”

Don Stewart, a Member of Parliament from part of Toronto, criticized Trudeau’s actions in a post on X, stating, "Lawless protesters run roughshod over Montreal in violent protest. The Prime Minister dances. This is the Canada built by the Liberal government." Stewart further called for a return to law and order in Canada.

In response to the protests, Trudeau condemned the violence and antisemitism, labeling the unrest “appalling.” He mentioned that the Royal Canadian Mounted Police were working together with local law enforcement, emphasizing the need for accountability for those responsible for the riots.

The controversy surrounding Trudeau’s concert appearance amidst such acts of violence has sparked intense discussions about leadership and responsibility during turbulent times. Trudeau’s office has not yet publicly commented on the incident.
