Opposition Intensifies Scrutiny of PM Modi’s Handling of Inflation Crisis

Economic Concerns Rise as Inflation Looms

In response to rising inflation fears, Rahul Gandhi, the leader of the opposition in the Lok Sabha, shared his thoughts on social media over the weekend. He warned that many Indian families would soon feel the financial strain. Sanjay Raut, a prominent Shiv Sena leader, echoed these sentiments during a press conference in Delhi. He criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi, suggesting that he is more focused on political campaigns in West Bengal than addressing the falling value of the rupee.

Raut reminded the Prime Minister of his earlier statements, where he highlighted that a weakening rupee negatively affects the nation’s reputation. “While Modi is busy trying to install a BJP government in West Bengal, the value of the rupee is dropping. What’s happening now?” he asked, emphasizing the urgency of the situation.

The rupee recently opened at a record low of 92.89 against the dollar and has further depreciated, reflecting ongoing pressure on the currency. Raut called for Modi to resign, stating, “The rupee has been falling since Modi took office. It’s time for him to pack his bags and leave.”

Warning Signs of Inflation

Earlier, Rahul Gandhi criticized the government for not taking the rupee’s decline and increasing fuel prices seriously. He claimed these are early indicators of an impending inflation crisis. According to him, while the government downplays the issue, everyday people are preparing for rising prices of essential goods.

Gandhi pointed out that increases in production and transport costs would especially harm Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs). He warned that this would surge daily expenses and put additional strain on the stock market due to foreign investments withdrawing. He accused the government of lacking a clear strategy and suggested that economic mismanagement would burden everyday families.

He stated, “The government may refer to this as ‘normal,’ but the truth is that production and transport costs are going up, affecting MSMEs the most. Prices of everyday goods will rise, and foreign investments will pull out faster, creating more pressure on the stock market. This will affect the finances of every household.”

Rising Fuel Costs in West Bengal

In West Bengal, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has highlighted rising fuel prices as a key issue ahead of the elections. She organized a rally to protest increases in LPG and fuel costs. Banerjee expressed skepticism about the government’s efforts to resolve the ongoing LPG crisis and pointed out that the price of domestic LPG cylinders has risen dramatically since 2014.

“How did we end up here? Were there no plans in place? The price of an LPG cylinder has jumped from ₹400 in 2014 to ₹1,000 today,” she remarked, directing her criticism at the BJP-led government.

While the Ministry of Petroleum claims there are adequate LPG supplies, reports of panic buying and long queues at depots have emerged across the country, suggesting a deeper issue at play.

This ongoing conversation highlights the pressing concerns regarding inflation and economic policies, as citizens watch closely to see how the government will respond.
