India-Ireland T20I Series Scheduled for June; Paul Stirling Steps Down Following World Cup Disappointment

Ireland Set for T20 Series Against India with New Leadership

Ireland is gearing up to face India in a T20I series this June, marking a new chapter in their cricket journey. Paul Stirling has stepped down as captain of the T20 side, a decision he announced on March 19. This change comes as discussions have been ongoing since last September between cricket boards, anticipating a short T20I series in Ireland before India’s white-ball tour of England in July.

Graham West, Ireland’s director of high performance, confirmed this transition in a press release, emphasizing the opportunity for fresh leadership. “With qualification for the T20 World Cup in 2028 secured, Paul’s decision opens the door for a new captain to start shaping the team’s direction ahead of the India series,” said West.

Upcoming Matches for India

Following the IPL 2026, India will compete against Afghanistan in a one-off Test and a three-match ODI series. The final ODI is set for June 20, with India facing England in a T20I on July 1. Although exact dates for the Ireland series are yet to be confirmed, it is expected to fall within this time frame.

Reasons Behind Stirling’s Decision

Stirling’s resignation as T20 captain follows a disappointing performance at the T20 World Cup 2026, where Ireland was eliminated in the group stage after only one victory out of four matches. The team faced losses against Sri Lanka and Australia, while a game against Zimbabwe was canceled due to weather.

Despite stepping down from the T20 captaincy, Stirling will remain Ireland’s ODI captain, ensuring dedicated leadership in each format. “I still have a lot of ambition as a player and believe this decision will help me focus on contributing effectively on the field,” he expressed.

Stirling views this as the right moment for a new leadership direction. “I wish the next T20 captain every success and will support them fully as we aim for growth and achievements on the international stage.”

Currently, Lorcan Tucker and Harry Tector are considered the top candidates to take over Stirling’s T20 captaincy.
