F1’s 2026 Calendar Faces Setback as Bahrain and Saudi Arabian Grands Prix Are Canceled
Formula 1’s 2026 race schedule has encountered an unexpected challenge, with the Bahrain and Saudi Arabian Grands Prix canceled due to ongoing safety concerns from the conflict involving the US and Iran in the Middle East. The announcement, made early Sunday in Shanghai, creates a significant gap in the tightly packed F1 calendar.
F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali acknowledged that this was a tough decision but deemed it necessary given the current circumstances. “While this was a difficult decision to take, it is unfortunately the right one at this stage considering the current situation in the Middle East,” he stated.
FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem emphasized the importance of safety for everyone involved in the championship. “The FIA will always prioritize the well-being of our community,” he said. “After careful consideration, we have made this decision with our responsibility firmly in mind.”
In their official statement, Formula 1 confirmed that various alternatives were considered, but rescheduling the races in April turned out to be unfeasible. “Due to the ongoing situation in the Middle East, the Bahrain and Saudi Arabian Grands Prix will not take place in April,” the statement read.
Reasons Behind the Cancellations
The cancellations stem from rising tensions in the Middle East. Retaliatory attacks from Iran following strikes by the US and Israel have heightened security concerns in both Bahrain and Saudi Arabia. These countries face significant risks for events as extensive and complex as Formula 1.
Organizing a Grand Prix weekend involves transporting hundreds of tons of equipment and personnel weeks ahead of time, and uncertainties around safety and travel made it risky for F1 to proceed.
Issues at major airports in the region have complicated travel plans for F1 staff heading to the season-opening race in Melbourne, adding to the turmoil.
Will There Be Rescheduling?
Unfortunately, the answer is no. While Formula 1 considered shifting races or finding alternative venues, the already packed calendar made it nearly impossible to make changes.
As a result, this year’s championship will feature 22 races, the shortest schedule since 2023. The cancellations also create a rare five-week break between the Japanese Grand Prix on March 29 and the Miami Grand Prix on May 3.
The support championships, including Formula 2, Formula 3, and the F1 Academy, will also miss their scheduled rounds in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia.
Previous Race Cancellations
While race cancellations are uncommon in Formula 1, they’re not without precedent. The Emilia Romagna Grand Prix in 2023 was canceled due to severe flooding in the region. Additionally, the contract for the Russian Grand Prix was terminated in 2022 following the invasion of Ukraine.
Interestingly, the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix went ahead the same year, despite nearby attacks during a practice session, underscoring the unpredictable nature of safety in the region.
Bahrain had already hosted two pre-season tests earlier this year before tensions escalated, highlighting the volatility in the region.
