Meet AI Jesus: The Church Introducing Digital Confessions

In Lucerne, Switzerland, St. Peter’s Church has introduced an innovative concept: an AI-powered hologram of Jesus that is being used for confessions. This unique initiative is part of an art project called “Deus in Machina,” translating to “God in a Machine.” Worshipers can communicate with the virtual Jesus, expressing their thoughts and concerns, while receiving feedback in return.

Although this setup is temporary, church officials believe that such technology might be beneficial for pastors in the future. Feedback from users has shown that about two-thirds find the experience to be spiritual. However, some critics argue that the AI Jesus is merely a gimmick, offering responses that feel generic.

The installation is set up within a standard confessional booth, featuring a screen that displays a lifelike image of Jesus. The hologram responds to visitors’ questions using computer-generated speech, and it can converse in 100 different languages, accommodating the varied backgrounds of many visitors to Lucerne.

When individuals enter the booth, they see a message that advises them to refrain from sharing personal information and reminds them that they use the service at their own discretion. Many have used the opportunity to discuss scripture or seek spiritual advice.

Developed by a team of experts from the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts, this AI Jesus was trained on data derived from the New Testament and various online religious resources.

Visitors have shared their thoughts on the AI Jesus experience. One individual expressed surprise at the ease of interaction, stating, “It was so easy, and even though it’s a machine, it gave me a lot of advice.” Another visitor noted, “I asked about breaking the cycle of violence. The response was to focus on prayer and avoid seeking revenge.” Another person mentioned how the AI was able to guide them on how to help others connect better with Jesus.

This pioneering blend of faith and technology is an intriguing exploration of how modern advancements can engage with traditional religious practices.
