Concerns Rise Over Age Misrepresentation Among Rajasthan Badminton Players
In a surprising turn of events, a group of 13 out of 20 badminton players set to represent Rajasthan at a national level has been accused of being overage. This issue came to light after several parents voiced their concerns, suggesting that some athletes who qualified for the Under-13 tournament in Jammu and the Under-11 national matches are actually older than the required age limit.
Manoj Dasot, Secretary of the Jaipur Badminton Association, explained the situation: “The parents are raising questions about the players’ ages. So, after their complaints, we decided it was best to conduct medical tests to confirm the real ages of the players.”
The Under-13 tournament is slated to take place in Jammu from November 28 to 30, while the Under-11 national matches are scheduled for December 4. The athletes’ eligibility was determined based on their performances in a recent state tournament held in Ajmer.
Following the protests from parents, the Rajasthan Badminton Association (RBA) has mandated that medical testing be conducted on the athletes. Currently, the situation has put the final selection of the Rajasthan team on hold.
Dasot urged parents to refrain from misrepresenting ages, emphasizing the importance of maintaining fairness in the sport. “I request parents personally to be truthful about their children’s ages, as it can affect everyone involved,” he said.
This is not the first time allegations of age discrepancies have surfaced in Rajasthan badminton. Many players expressed their frustration, insisting that those who falsify their ages should face bans, as it undermines the integrity of the sport and demoralizes honest competitors.
Young player Manan Sharma shared his perspective: “It definitely affects the morale of others.” Another player, Vayam Lamba, agreed that those found guilty should be banned permanently. Aman Kumar Kumawat, an assistant coach, added, “Such issues can demoralize many children. It’s disheartening when a few individuals disrupt the opportunities for others.”
As the situation develops, the RBA aims to ensure that fairness prevails in future competitions, offering a level playing field for all athletes involved.
