Sanju Samson: A Rising Star in Indian Cricket

Sanju Samson is known not just for his talent but also for his infectious laughter. For quite some time, however, it seemed like his cricket career was more about potential than actual achievements. Many have talked about his skills without seeing them fully realized on the field. Early in his career, he struggled to meet the high expectations placed upon him.

India vs New Zealand, T20 World Cup Final: Key Updates

Watching Samson bat is a real pleasure. His style is elegant and easygoing, reminiscent of Rohit Sharma when he is in his groove. There’s a certain simplicity in his movements at the crease, often just a small shift or a gentle press of the front foot to regain balance. Then, his arms flow freely, allowing the bat to swing effortlessly. This captivating style even earned him praise from West Indies legend Brian Lara.

Now, after years of waiting, Samson appears to be fully enjoying his moment. “I’ve been patient, working hard in training. I’m thankful, but there’s still one more match to play. If we do that, it will make all the effort worthwhile,” he shared. He spoke with relief after delivering another stunning performance in the semi-final.

His outstanding innings in the semi-final helped India reach the final, making them the first defending champions to achieve such a feat. Samson received the Player-of-the-Match award for his crucial 97 runs against the West Indies and his impressive 89 in the semi-final against England.

In the 2024 T20 World Cup, Samson spent most of the tournament on the bench, eagerly awaiting his turn. At the start of the current T20 World Cup, he found himself in a similar situation, again not being picked to play. As a 31-year-old, it seemed like he was slipping down the pecking order with younger players performing well.

But now, because of his recent performances, Samson has put India into the T20 World Cup final. He still has more work to do, aiming for another game-winning performance to help India claim their third championship.

Samson’s transformation in the tournament has mirrored India’s journey, marked by crucial knocks during high-pressure situations. After not playing at the start of the tournament following a lackluster series against New Zealand, Samson has made a remarkable comeback. His resurgence has even earned him a spot on the shortlist for the prestigious ICC Player of the Tournament award.

A Journey of Ups and Downs

Samson’s international career began with a single T20I match against Zimbabwe in 2015. After that, he spent several years mainly on the sidelines, playing in the IPL for teams like Rajasthan Royals and Delhi Daredevils. That one appearance kept his dreams alive, even as he waited more than five years for another chance.

He returned to the Indian team in 2020, backed by fans who believed he could be the next big wicketkeeper-batter. However, stiff competition from players like KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant made it tough for him to secure a spot.

As India rotated its players more frequently, Samson got more chances to showcase his talent. His impressive domestic performances began to draw attention, especially as legends like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma stepped away from T20 internationals after the 2024 World Cup. This opened the door for younger talents like Ruturaj Gaikwad and Yashasvi Jaiswal.

Yet, at the beginning of this World Cup, Samson struggled to find his footing, frequently sitting out while others were preferred. However, since he returned to the playing XI alongside Abhishek Sharma, he has made an immediate impact, scoring under pressure and boosting his average.

Living the Dream

With two consecutive Player-of-the-Match awards, Samson played a crucial role in leading India to the final against New Zealand. His latest performance against England included seven sixes and a brilliant 89 runs.

Not long ago, he faced challenges that made his place in the team uncertain. Yet now, after powerful knocks of 97 not out against West Indies and 89 against England, he has established himself as a key player, especially during a time when other teammates have struggled.

Despite the accolades, Samson believes his mission will only be complete if India secures the trophy in Ahmedabad. “It feels great that I’ve been working hard for years to perform for my country,” he told reporters after the semi-final win.

This World Cup has become a story of redemption for Sanju Samson. After years of waiting, he is finally living the dream he has long pursued—and he aims to leave it all on the field with one last epic performance in the final.
