West Indies Team Stuck in Kolkata Amid Travel Chaos

The West Indies cricket team remains stuck in Kolkata for the fifth consecutive day following their elimination from the T20 World Cup. Their travel plans have been disrupted due to international airspace restrictions, a result of ongoing conflicts involving the US and Israel in Iran.

Local sources indicate that a charter flight has been organized to get the Caribbean players back home, but they are still waiting for final flight approvals.

A representative from the Cricket Association of Bengal shared, “Details about departures for both West Indies and South Africa are still pending.” However, it was mentioned that four South African players might leave for New Zealand on Friday night for an upcoming series.

The West Indies were knocked out of the T20 World Cup after losing to India by five wickets at the Eden Gardens. On the other hand, South Africa’s run in the tournament ended with their loss to New Zealand in the semifinals.

While the exact departure time for the rest of the South African squad remains uncertain, the Cricket West Indies confirmed earlier that efforts for a charter flight were in place. They mentioned that key officials, including representatives from the International Cricket Council (ICC), were involved in arranging the team’s return.

In a statement, Cricket West Indies assured fans that the team is safe and that all necessary measures are being taken for their return journey. They noted, “The situation is complex and fluid due to airspace restrictions, but we are focused on ensuring the safe return of our players.”

This update follows head coach Daren Sammy’s expression of frustration on social media, where he stated he “just wants to go home.” After receiving news about the charter flight, he posted, “Got an update. That’s all WI wanted.”

Some West Indies players may choose to remain in India to join their respective Indian Premier League (IPL) teams, which will start later this month. Players like Rovman Powell (Kolkata Knight Riders) and Shimron Hetmyer (Rajasthan Royals) are among those expected to begin their IPL training soon.

Meanwhile, Zimbabwean players, who were also stranded in India for similar reasons, have started returning home in groups after alternative travel routes were arranged by the ICC.

The cricket world is closely watching these developments as the teams navigate the ongoing travel challenges.
