UK Government to Release Mandelson Diplomatic Files in Ongoing Inquiry

UK Government to Release Key Documents on Peter Mandelson’s U.S. Ambassador Appointment

The UK government has announced plans to release important documents regarding Peter Mandelson’s appointment as the ambassador to the United States. This information is set to be unsealed in early March, following a motion from the House of Commons that demands transparency related to Mandelson’s vetting process for the role.

Darren Jones, who serves as chief secretary to Prime Minister Keir Starmer, shared this update with MPs, stating, “We expect to publish the first set of documents very soon.” However, he cautioned that certain documents are still involved in an ongoing investigation by the Metropolitan Police.

A portion of the documents will address national security and international relations and will be reviewed by the Intelligence and Security Committee. This process aligns with the House’s request for oversight.

Recently, police arrested a 72-year-old man in Camden as part of an investigation into public misconduct related to Mandelson. This inquiry was prompted by reports of Mandelson’s connections to the convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

Mandelson, who previously denied any wrongdoing, has faced scrutiny over claims that he shared confidential government details with Epstein while he was the business secretary. Email exchanges released by the U.S. Department of Justice also suggest that Mandelson may have communicated sensitive market information during the financial crisis in 2008.

In response to mounting pressure, Starmer expressed his outrage, stating that the information surrounding Mandelson’s actions is shocking and has caused deep betrayal. He noted that if he had known earlier about Mandelson’s misconduct, the former ambassador “would never have been anywhere near government.”

Mandelson, a key figure in New Labour, was appointed U.S. ambassador but was dismissed in September 2025 as investigations into his ties with Epstein gained attention. Following his dismissal, he resigned from the Labour Party and stepped down from the House of Lords.

Despite an early success in negotiating a tariff deal with the U.S. under President Donald Trump, Mandelson’s tenure was cut short amid escalating scrutiny. There have also been calls for Starmer to step down following the controversy surrounding Mandelson’s appointment.
