Babar Azam is close to achieving a significant milestone in T20 cricket. The talented right-handed batsman is just 52 runs away from becoming the fastest player to reach 11,000 runs in this format. Currently, the record is held by Chris Gayle, who accomplished this feat in 314 innings during the Bangladesh Premier League in December 2017.
Babar’s opportunity to make history will come when he faces Australia in the third T20 International on Monday, November 18, at the Bellerive Oval in Hobart. To date, he has scored 10,948 runs in 295 innings across 306 matches, maintaining an average of 43.61 and a strike rate of 129.30.
The Pakistani cricketer has previously set records for being the quickest to reach 7,000, 9,000, and 10,000 runs in T20 cricket. If he reaches 11,000 runs, he will join an elite group of only ten other players, including legends like Gayle, Shoaib Malik, Kieron Pollard, and Virat Kohli.
However, Babar has been facing challenges lately. His recent performances in the ongoing T20 series against Australia have not gone as planned. In the first match at The Gabba, he managed only three runs before being dismissed by Nathan Ellis, which contributed to Pakistan’s 29-run loss. In the second game held at the Sydney Cricket Ground, Babar was again out for three runs after falling to Xavier Bartlett’s bowling. This defeat, by 13 runs, meant that Pakistan lost the series.
Babar batted at No. 3 in the first match and opened the batting in the second, but unfortunately, his luck has not changed. Fans will be hoping for a turnaround in his performance as he looks to make history in the upcoming match.
