Australia kicked off their T20 World Cup 2026 campaign in style, claiming a convincing 67-run victory over Ireland at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo on February 11. The match was a strong display from the Australians, even though they were without their captain, Mitchell Marsh.
Nathan Ellis was the star of the show for Australia, impressing with his bowling and taking three wickets during the powerplay. Ireland faced a challenging target of 183 runs, but their chase got off to a rocky start when captain Paul Stirling had to retire after just one ball due to a hamstring injury sustained while fielding.
From there, things went downhill for Ireland. Matthew Kuhnemann broke through early, catching Harry Tector out with a well-placed delivery. The situation worsened quickly as Ellis showcased his skills, outsmarting Ross Adair with a slower ball that knocked down his stumps.
Ellis continued his excellent form, taking Curtis Campher’s wicket as well. By the time he finished his spell, he had impressive figures of 4 wickets for just 12 runs, leaving Ireland struggling at 27 for 4 within just over four overs.
As if that wasn’t enough, Adam Zampa joined the fun, using his spin to confuse the Irish batsmen. Zampa wrapped up his spell with outstanding figures of 4 for 23, helping to restrict Ireland to just 115 runs in under 17 overs.
Earlier, Australia had set a competitive total with key performances from Marcus Stoinis (45 runs off 29 balls), Josh Inglis (37 runs off 17 balls), and Matt Renshaw (37 runs off 33 balls), securing a total of 182 runs for 6 wickets.
This victory marks a strong start for Australia in the tournament, setting a positive tone for their upcoming matches.
