Border 2: A Closer Look at Action Without Green Screens

The highly anticipated film Border 2 has now hit theaters, and its impressive action scenes are capturing a lot of attention. In a recent chat, producers Bhushan Kumar and director Anurag Singh shared insights into the hard work behind the film, especially the challenges of creating realistic war scenes without the aid of green screens.

Director Anurag Singh shared that one of the toughest aspects was shooting action in real locations instead of controlled studio settings. The film was shot in various places like Dehradun and Jhansi, often in challenging weather conditions. Large crews had to manage complex setups to capture the best footage.

Singh explained, “The action sequences were especially difficult because of the sheer scale. We started with a small crew but ended up with hundreds of people on set. We shot in real spots, not on a green screen, facing freezing temperatures or intense heat, and we had to film all day.”

Creating war sequences required flawless coordination between many departments, making sure everything was perfectly timed. Singh noted, “You need multiple teams to come together for each shot. Everything has to work in sync, from stunts and explosions to actor movements and crowd control. There’s no room for mistakes.”

Managing special effects was another challenge. Singh pointed out that some elements, especially aerial combat, needed to rely on visual effects. “Real fighter planes aren’t available to fly, so we had to create them through VFX. Ensuring everything looks believable while maintaining a high level of realism was quite a task,” he mentioned.

Despite the technical hurdles, Singh emphasized the importance of emotional depth in the action scenes. Moments such as trench battles and tank encounters are crafted to feel authentic, prioritizing character emotions over sheer spectacle.

He believes strong performances play a key role in enhancing the emotional impact of even the largest scenes. “Good actors and well-written scenes bring emotions to life,” he noted. He expressed confidence in his cast, mentioning the talents of actors like Varun Dhawan, Sunny Deol, and Ahan Shetty, who bring heartfelt connections to their roles.

Border 2 builds on the legacy of the original 1997 film, combining spectacular action with meaningful storytelling. The goal was to recreate the intensity of war while ensuring that every explosion and effect serves the story’s emotional core.
