Trump Calls for National Emergency Over Cuba
On Thursday, President Donald Trump announced a national emergency related to Cuba through an executive order. He accused the Cuban government of collaborating with hostile countries and terrorist groups and introduced measures to sanction those supplying oil to the island.
In the executive order, Trump described the actions of the Cuban government as a significant threat to U.S. national security and foreign policy. To tackle this issue, he instructed the creation of a system that will enable the U.S. to impose tariffs on countries that provide oil to Cuba.
This decision represents a considerable increase in U.S. pressure on Cuba, with the aim of protecting American interests. The White House noted that the move is part of a broader strategy to confront regimes that pose threats to the United States.
Trump’s order specifically names countries like Russia, China, Iran, Hamas, and Hezbollah as partners with Cuba in activities that threaten U.S. security. He emphasized that Cuba is home to a major Russian intelligence facility that allegedly tries to gather sensitive U.S. information.
The order also highlighted Cuba’s history of human rights abuses, including the persecution of political adversaries and restrictions on freedom of speech. Trump reaffirmed the U.S. stance of zero tolerance towards the actions of the Cuban regime and expressed support for the Cuban people’s desire for a democratic society.
Under the new order, the Commerce Department will assess whether a foreign nation is supplying oil to Cuba. Furthermore, the State Department will work with various agencies to determine the level of tariffs to be imposed.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio will oversee the emergency measures and provide updates to Congress, while the Commerce Department will monitor oil suppliers.
The White House framed the order as essential for safeguarding U.S. interests against Cuba’s harmful activities. This action builds on Trump’s previous policies towards Cuba, which reversed the more lenient approach taken during Obama’s presidency.
The executive order is set to be enforced starting Friday.
