IS Bindra, Influential Figure in Indian Cricket, Passes Away at 84

IS Bindra, a prominent figure in Indian cricket administration and former head of both the BCCI and the Punjab Cricket Association, passed away on Sunday, January 25, at the age of 84 after battling a prolonged illness. His passing is felt deeply across the cricket community, marking the conclusion of an era in Indian cricket governance.

Bindra was instrumental in transforming Indian cricket into a major industry, alongside fellow cricket administrator Jagmohan Dalmiya. His vision and leadership helped shape modern cricket both financially and commercially, leaving a lasting impact on the sport that will be remembered for years to come.

Jay Shah, the chairman of the ICC, expressed his condolences on social media, stating, “Deepest condolences on the passing of Mr. I S Bindra, former BCCI president and a stalwart of Indian cricket administration. May his legacy inspire future generations. Om Shanti.”

The Legacy of IS Bindra

Throughout his career, Bindra was a respected figure in cricket administration, renowned for his dedication and transformative contributions to the sport at both domestic and international levels. He served as the President of the Punjab Cricket Association from 1978 to 2014, playing a crucial role in enhancing cricket infrastructure in Punjab. Under his leadership, the Mohali Cricket Stadium was built, which has now become one of India’s top international cricket venues. In recognition of his significant contributions, the stadium was renamed the IS Bindra Stadium in 2015.

As the President of the BCCI from 1993 to 1996, he influenced cricket policies, guided domestic tournaments, and elevated India’s global standing in cricket. His collaboration with Jagmohan Dalmiya was vital in bringing the 1987 ODI World Cup to India, marking a turning point for the sport’s commercial growth.

Known for his strategic thinking and dedication, Bindra was pivotal in mentoring younger leaders in cricket administration. He worked tirelessly to strengthen domestic cricket, encourage grassroots development, and promote international cricket in Punjab, always aiming to engage fans and improve the infrastructure for future cricketing talents in India.
