Trump Administration Hits British Activist with Sanctions Over Alleged Hamas Links

Trump and Netanyahu Stand Together Against Hamas and Iran

Former Deputy National Security Advisor Steve Yates recently shared insights on U.S. tensions with Venezuela and highlighted the partnership between Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former President Donald Trump. Both leaders are focused on disarming Hamas and preventing Iran’s influence.

The Trump administration is putting pressure on U.K. Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer following the imposition of sanctions on Zaher Birawi, a London-based activist accused of ties to Hamas. The U.S. Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) stated on January 21 that it is addressing Hamas’s covert connections to various organizations in the U.S. and abroad.

The announcement included sanctions on six groups based in Gaza and the Popular Conference for Palestinians Abroad (PCPA), which U.S. officials claim acts as a front for Hamas. Birawi, 64, is alleged to hold a senior position within Hamas through his role in the PCPA.

Birawi is known for organizing flotillas to Gaza, some of which gained public support from activists like Greta Thunberg. U.S. Undersecretary John K. Hurley emphasized that the Trump administration is determined to prevent Hamas from using the financial system to fund terrorist activities.

The sanctions have prompted discussions in the U.K. about counterterrorism measures against Birawi. Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp welcomed the U.S. action, expressing that Britain should not be a refuge for those linked to terrorist organizations. Meanwhile, Alex Hearn from Labour Against Antisemitism pointed out that Birawi continues to operate in London despite the U.S. sanctions.

Birawi has lived in the U.K. for over 30 years and has been central to events supporting Palestinian rights. He has publicly denied any connections to Hamas, insisting he is a lawful British citizen focused on that cause. The situation remains under close scrutiny, as the U.K. considers its next steps in response to these developments.
