Real Madrid Parts Ways with Manager Xabi Alonso
Real Madrid has decided to end its relationship with manager Xabi Alonso just one day after the team’s defeat to Barcelona in the Spanish Super Cup on January 11. This move concludes Alonso’s tenure at the club, which lasted for seven months.
In a thrilling match, Real Madrid lost 2-3 against Barcelona, marking a disappointing start to the season’s trophy drive. Speculations had been swirling about tensions between Alonso and key player Vinicius Jr., mainly due to the rotation strategy implemented by Alonso.
The club released a statement saying, “Real Madrid CF announces that, by mutual agreement, it has been decided to part ways with Xabi Alonso. He will always be remembered fondly by Madrid fans as a club legend who embodied the values of Real Madrid.” The statement also expressed gratitude to Alonso and his coaching staff for their contributions, wishing them well in future endeavors.
Xabi Alonso’s Short Stint as Manager
Alonso took the managerial position on June 1, following a successful period at Bayer Leverkusen where he led the team to a historic domestic double and the Europa League final. Initially at Real Madrid, Alonso’s leadership looked promising, as he guided the team to the Club World Cup semifinals and won 13 out of 14 matches, with a single loss to Atletico Madrid.
However, a defeat to Liverpool on November 4 marked a decline in the team’s performance, resulting in just two wins from the next eight matches. Even though Alonso managed to secure five consecutive victories, it wasn’t enough to convince the club’s executives to keep him on board.
In the first Clasico against Barcelona this season, Real Madrid showcased an impressive performance, winning 2-1 and briefly pulling ahead in the league. Yet, as Barcelona regained momentum, Real Madrid struggled, partially due to the inconsistent form of Vinicius Jr. and injuries to crucial players, causing them to fall behind in the standings.
Alvaro Arbeloa Takes Over as Interim Manager
Following Alonso’s departure, Real Madrid has appointed Alvaro Arbeloa, the club’s second-team manager and a former defender, as the interim manager. Arbeloa is set to lead the team immediately, starting with a Copa del Rey match against second-division club Albacete.
Reflecting on Alonso’s Tenure
Xabi Alonso’s return to Real Madrid was anticipated as the dawn of a new era. However, his time at the club unraveled quicker than expected. Having signed a three-year contract, his successful past at Bayer Leverkusen did not translate into success at Real.
While at Leverkusen, Alonso achieved remarkable feats, including an unbeaten Bundesliga title and the German Cup. His expected success at Real Madrid, similar to that of another club legend, Zinedine Zidane, ultimately did not materialize.
As the season progressed, the team faced significant defeats in multiple competitions, including the Champions League, revealing gaps in both performance and confidence. What started as a promising title challenge quickly slipped away, with Real Madrid trailing four points behind Barcelona.
Additionally, Alonso’s time was marked by reports of internal conflicts, including disagreements with senior players, which contributed to tension in the locker room. His dismissal highlights Real Madrid’s expectation for immediate results and reflects their limited patience for underperformance.
As he departs, Alonso leaves behind a mixed legacy. A former player, he made 236 appearances for Real Madrid from 2009 to 2014, winning multiple titles, including LaLiga and the Champions League. His coaching journey began at Real, and while he enjoyed initial success with youth teams, his move to the senior squad has come to an unanticipated end.
