Travis Head Hints at Missing Big Bash League Season Due to Burnout Concerns

Star Australian cricketer Travis Head has suggested he might skip the current season of the Big Bash League (BBL) as he focuses on avoiding burnout. The left-handed opener aims to remain in top form for the upcoming T20 World Cup, which starts on February 7. This decision comes after his significant contributions in helping Australia retain the Ashes.

Head described the intense Ashes series as emotionally challenging, stating that he needs some time off before what will be another busy cricket season next year. At 32 years old, he has had a packed schedule recently, participating in a white-ball series against India and playing a Sheffield Shield match in preparation for the Ashes. During this series, Head showcased his exceptional talent, scoring two crucial centuries, including a rapid 123 in the first match in Perth.

When asked about his participation with the Adelaide Strikers in the BBL, Head shared, “It’s probably unlikely given the emotional toll of the Ashes and what’s ahead with the World Cup.” He emphasized the importance of entering the World Cup feeling refreshed.

Head hasn’t played for the Adelaide Strikers since the 2022-23 BBL season. He has often chosen to prioritize international matches and the Indian Premier League (IPL) since rejoining the tournament in 2024. With the Sunrisers Hyderabad, he formed a powerful opening pair alongside Abhishek Sharma and was instrumental in their success, scoring 567 runs at an impressive strike rate of 191.59 during the 2024 season, followed by another strong performance in 2025.

The BBL, which kicked off on December 14, is once again missing many of Australia’s top Test players due to the Ashes. Unlike the IPL, the BBL lacks a dedicated window and often overlaps with Australia’s international schedule.

While Head may not participate this season, other key players like Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood could also miss the tournament as they recover from injuries ahead of the T20 World Cup. Cummins has been managing a back issue and played only one Test during the Ashes before opting out of the remainder of the series. On the other hand, Hazlewood missed the entire Ashes due to a recurring hamstring problem, which was complicated by Achilles pain during recovery.

The BBL faced another setback when Pakistan fast bowler Shaheen Afridi was ruled out for the rest of the season due to a knee injury. Afridi, a top draft pick for the Brisbane Heat, played just three games before being recalled by the Pakistan Cricket Board for careful management of his recovery leading up to the T20 World Cup.

Interestingly, Afridi, along with Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan, had received clearance to play in the BBL before being exempt from Pakistan’s upcoming T20I series against Sri Lanka.
