India-New Zealand Free Trade Agreement Set to Boost Skilled Professionals

The recently finalized Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between India and New Zealand is poised to create exciting opportunities for skilled Indian workers in fields like information technology, engineering, design, healthcare, and education. Members of the Indian community in Auckland shared their enthusiasm for the deal, which is expected to come into effect next year after necessary domestic approvals.

This trade agreement allows India to enter New Zealand’s markets without tariffs, promising around $20 billion in investment over the next 15 years. It will also facilitate more temporary employment visas for Indians and enhance access for pharmaceutical and medical device industries.

Auckland-based computer engineer Rani Singh mentioned that the agreement couldn’t have come at a better time, particularly for those in tech and services. She noted, “While many trade deals focus on physical goods, this one emphasizes services and digital skills, which is crucial for professionals like me.” She believes that India’s strong position in IT and software, coupled with New Zealand’s growing demand for specialist skills, offers great potential for collaboration and business innovation.

Moreover, clearer routes for investment and professional movement should simplify working between the two nations, making it easier for tech companies and freelancers to join forces.

Fashion designer Shalini Alok echoed similar sentiments, highlighting India’s rich heritage in textiles and design. She noted that New Zealand’s commitment to ethical fashion and sustainability aligns well with Indian craftsmanship. “This agreement can simplify sourcing materials and collaborating with artisans, enabling us to share Indian-inspired designs with the Kiwi market without the usual complications,” she said. She envisions the deal as an opportunity to blend Indian and New Zealand aesthetics, fostering small businesses and promoting fair trade practices.

Engineer Amit Singh remarked on the manufacturing and engineering benefits of the agreement, particularly in food processing and dairy technologies. With India focusing on modernizing its food and beverage sector, New Zealand’s expertise in sustainable practices can pave the way for better collaboration.

“Easier trade flows and clearer regulations are essential for transferring technology and best practices between our countries,” Singh explained. He noted that many Indian professionals are already playing vital roles in New Zealand’s processing and manufacturing sectors, acting as bridges between demand and expertise.

In summary, this trade agreement promises to bring substantial benefits to skilled professionals in both nations, paving the way for new partnerships and growth opportunities.
