U.S. Coast Guard Pursues Oil Tanker Near Venezuela

The U.S. Coast Guard is currently chasing an oil tanker in international waters close to Venezuela, officials reported on Sunday. This marks the second operation of its kind over the weekend and the third in less than two weeks.

A U.S. official stated that they are actively pursuing a vessel under sanctions, involved in evading penalties associated with Venezuela. The tanker is reportedly flying a false flag and is subject to a judicial seizure order.

Another official indicated that the tanker had not yet been boarded, and the Coast Guard’s strategy for interceptions can vary, including maneuvering close to the targeted vessel.

Oil Prices Rise Amid U.S. Actions

As the U.S. takes action against Venezuelan tankers, oil prices have begun to climb. However, officials downplayed concerns about rising prices in the U.S., asserting that the seized vessels were operating in the black market. Kevin Hassett, director of the White House’s National Economic Council, noted during a television interview that these actions should not lead to significant price increases.

Trade experts caution that the seizures might impact oil prices as trading resumes on Monday. Giovanni Staunovo, a UBS analyst, suggested that market participants could interpret these events as heightened tensions, potentially leading to modest price increases.

Analysts added that these seizures could raise geopolitical risks, affecting the movement of oil from sanctioned countries like Venezuela, Russia, and Iran. As tensions rise, it may encourage other nations, such as Ukraine, to escalate their actions against Russian vessels.

Overall, while some expect challenges in oil logistics may lead to steeper discounts on sanctioned oil, this could help stabilize price fluctuations in benchmark oil markets.
