Amazon’s AWS re:Invent Highlights Innovation and Growth
Amazon recently held its annual AWS re:Invent event, a key gathering for the cloud community that showcases important talks, technical sessions, and innovation discussions. At the event, CEO Matt Garman talked with podcast hosts Ben Gilbert and David Rosenthal about various topics, including Generative AI and how AWS approaches its product strategy in an evolving workforce influenced by AI.
Garman was candid when discussing areas where Amazon struggles. When asked what the company isn’t good at, he said, “Amazon is particularly bad at copying competitors.” He explained that trying to imitate others often doesn’t work for them. Instead, Garman emphasized the importance of understanding customer issues and developing unique solutions rather than simply replicating existing products.
The discussion also touched on the growing role of AI within AWS. Garman noted that it’s becoming increasingly difficult to measure AI’s impact since it is now integrated into many of their services.
In more encouraging news, Amazon announced that its cloud computing division saw a 20% revenue increase in the third quarter of 2025, surpassing analysts’ expectations. AWS revenue totaled $33 billion, and operating income rose by 9% to $11.4 billion, making up about two-thirds of Amazon’s total operating profit. The growth rate marks the fastest expansion for AWS in nearly three years, which has positive implications for future sales forecasts.
CEO Andy Jassy remarked, “AWS is growing at a pace we haven’t seen since 2022.” He also mentioned strong demand for AI and core infrastructure, highlighting their focus on increasing capacity.
Amazon’s Chief Financial Officer, Brian Olsavsky, anticipated that the company would spend around $125 billion on capital expenditures this year, with even higher spending expected next year, primarily on AI initiatives. So far, Amazon has invested $89.9 billion in capital projects in the first three quarters, largely driven by their focus on AI development.
