Israel Strikes Hezbollah Bases as Disarmament Clock Ticks Down

Israel Conducts Airstrikes on Hezbollah in Lebanon Ahead of Deadline

Israel recently launched a series of airstrikes targeting Hezbollah positions in southern and northeastern Lebanon. This action took place just prior to a December 31 deadline for the group to disarm. According to Israeli military sources, these strikes aimed at Hezbollah’s training centers and weapon storage facilities.

The timing of the strikes coincides with an upcoming meeting of a committee responsible for monitoring a U.S.-brokered ceasefire that ended the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah last year. This committee includes representatives from the U.S., France, and United Nations peacekeepers stationed along the Israel-Lebanon border.

International Concerns Over Rising Tensions

The United States, along with Saudi Arabia and France, is set to meet with Lebanese army chief Gen. Rodolph Haikal to discuss enhancing the army’s presence along the border. This gathering aims to mitigate the risk of escalating tensions in the region.

Reports suggest that political divisions in Lebanon may hinder efforts to disarm Hezbollah. The Lebanese government has expressed hopes that its army can clear Hezbollah from the southern region near the Litani River by year’s end.

Speaker of the Lebanese Parliament, Nabih Berri, remarked that the Israeli airstrikes send a clear message in light of the forthcoming Paris meeting. He described these actions as a direct signal related to the discussions taking place.

In a separate development, Israel reported the death of a Hezbollah operative involved in intelligence gathering against Israeli forces in the region.

As the situation evolves, local and international entities remain vigilant, looking for paths to maintain peace and stability in the area.
