Police Detain Seven Men in Sydney Anti-Terror Raids Amid Memorial for Bondi Beach Attack Victim

Australian authorities have taken seven men into custody during anti-terror operations in Sydney on Thursday. This comes as the community mourns the loss of the youngest victim of a tragic shooting at Bondi Beach.

New South Wales Police confirmed that an operation at George Street in Liverpool, located in Sydney’s southwest, has concluded. Officials reported that tactical police acted on intelligence suggesting a violent act might be planned, leading to the interception of two vehicles related to the investigation. Currently, the seven detainees are aiding police with inquiries.

Additionally, it has been indicated that these men may have been heading toward Bondi Beach, though authorities have assured there are no known connections to the recent assault that claimed lives during a Hanukkah celebration.

In a somber ceremony on Thursday, the community gathered to honor 10-year-old Matilda, the youngest victim of the Bondi Beach attack, whose family has requested that her last name not be disclosed. The funeral was marked by tears and heartfelt tributes from friends, family, and classmates. Matilda’s teacher, Irina Goodhew, emphasized her bright spirit, saying, “Matilda taught us that true goodness lies in the love and compassion we share.”

Students from La Perouse Public School also remembered her fondly, giving her an Indigenous nickname, “wuri wuri,” which means “the little ray of sunshine.”

Rabbi Yehoram Ulman, who lost his son-in-law in the attack, spoke at Matilda’s funeral, recalling how her parents took the time to support him during their own grief. He praised their strength and compassion amid tragedy.

Matilda’s parents, Valentyna and Michael—Ukrainian immigrants—shared that they chose her name to honor their new home in Australia. Michael expressed that he wanted her name to represent the love and hope they found in their new country.

The Bondi Beach shooting resulted in the deaths of 15 individuals, including Matilda and others who were attending the celebration. The attack is attributed to a father-son duo, with the father killed by police at the scene, while the son remains critically injured and faces multiple charges, including murder and terrorism-related offenses.

This is a developing story, and updates will follow as more information becomes available.
