US Attorney General Takes Firm Stance Against Extremist Groups

WASHINGTON: On Thursday, US Attorney General Pam Bondi announced a significant escalation in federal investigations into the anti-fascist movement known as antifa and other extremist groups. This decision is part of an internal directive that calls on the FBI to create a list of organizations possibly engaged in domestic terrorism.

The memo, which has been seen by Reuters, instructs the Justice Department to focus on probing and prosecuting acts of domestic terrorism. This includes scrutinizing potential tax crimes linked to extremist groups that may have defrauded the IRS.

This directive follows an earlier order from President Donald Trump, who aimed to classify antifa as a terrorist organization and expressed his intent to crack down on left-wing groups in light of recent violent incidents.

According to the Anti-Defamation League, antifa is described as a decentralized movement made up of various groups and individuals working against fascism.

The Justice Department has not yet responded to requests for comments regarding the memo.

In her directive, Bondi stated that these domestic terrorists often use violence or threats to push their political agendas. She mentioned their opposition to law enforcement, extreme stances on immigration, radical gender views, and other anti-American ideologies.

Bondi emphasized that the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Forces should make investigating these activities a top priority. She also directed federal law enforcement agencies to gather any intelligence they might have on antifa and share it with investigators.

Additionally, the FBI and joint terrorism task forces are tasked with reviewing incidents from the last five years that may involve acts of domestic terrorism, such as targeting law enforcement or Supreme Court justices.

As part of this initiative, the FBI is expected to develop new strategies aimed at dismantling networks involved in alleged domestic terrorism, similarly to how they handle violent organized crime.

The memo also encourages the department’s grant-making offices to give priority to funding programs in states and municipalities that aim to prevent domestic terrorism. Lastly, it instructs the FBI to enhance its tip line to make it easier for citizens, including journalists, to report suspected acts of domestic terrorism.
