New Delhi: Tragic Murder of Assistant Professor in East Delhi
A 42-year-old assistant professor at Delhi University was tragically found murdered in her apartment in Vasundhara Enclave on Thursday afternoon. Debosmita Paul, who taught in the Department of English at Shivaji College, lived alone in a flat while her parents resided nearby.
The police received an emergency call from Debosmita’s sister, Devarati Paul, at around 2:35 PM. Devarati reported her concerns after failing to reach her sister throughout the day. Worried for her safety, she went to the apartment and broke down the door, only to discover Debosmita unresponsive inside.
Upon arrival, the police found Debosmita lying on her bed with serious head injuries. Initial investigations indicated that she had been attacked with a blunt object, and there were additional injuries on her hands that suggested a sharp weapon might also have been used.
Debosmita was a respected academic known for her work in partition studies, Indian literature, and postcolonial studies. She earned her PhD from Jamia Millia Islamia in 2016 and held advanced degrees from Barkatullah University and Maharaja Agrasen College.
While the motive behind the murder is still under investigation, police officers noted that robbery does not seem to be the cause at this time. Debosmita’s earrings were found intact, and no belongings have been reported missing.
Authorities are also looking into her personal and professional life, as sources revealed that she was involved in legal proceedings related to a separation. Her body has been sent to a hospital for preservation and a post-mortem examination. An FIR for murder has been filed at the New Ashok Nagar police station as investigations continue.
