IND vs SA: India’s Late-Game Struggles Surface in Raipur ODI Defeat to South Africa

India entered Raipur buzzing with excitement, thanks to Virat Kohli scoring his second consecutive century and Ruturaj Gaikwad achieving his first ODI hundred. The venue was packed with 60,000 fans, and with the scoreboard reading 358 for 5, it felt like a night meant for India. Yet, as the match unfolded, that commanding score slipped away like an unrealized dream.

The Impact of Dew on Bowling

As dew settled in, it affected both the ball and the bowlers, revealing a longstanding issue for India: they lack a reliable finisher. Aiden Markram’s century and the aggressive play of Matthew Breetzke and Dewald Brevis kept South Africa’s chase steady. They showcased poise, leveling the series while exposing India’s recurring weaknesses.

Brevis scored 54 off just 34 balls, which proved crucial for South Africa’s momentum. Even when he fell with 70 runs still needed, the visitors maintained their focus. Tension rose when Breetzke and Marco Jansen fell in quick succession, and Tony de Zorzi had to leave the field due to injury. However, new arrivals Corbin Bosch and Keshav Maharaj calmed the situation, easily bringing South Africa to victory with 27 runs needed from the last 30 balls. Meanwhile, India was left to ponder the runs they let slip in the final overs.

The Recurrent Challenge

This series has shown a familiar pattern: India loses the toss, Kohli shines with a hundred, and the team scores close to or over 350. After that, dew arrives, complicating things for bowlers and throwing the match into disarray. Conditions make it a struggle rather than a tactical contest.

Around the chase’s halfway mark, the ball became increasingly hard to handle. In Ranchi, South Africa made mistakes that cost them dearly, while in Raipur, needing 359 to win, they approached their target with discipline and won with four balls left.

South Africa’s ability to build an innings was evident. Markram posted a solid 110 runs, supported by Temba Bavuma and Breetzke, ensuring they kept up with the required pace. As the dew made batting easier, they remained calm, finishing the last 100 runs without panic.

India may feel the toss influenced their fate, but the gaps in their innings told a bigger story. Strong teams instinctively claim those crucial extra runs, and India missed out this time. Kohli and Gaikwad sparked a brilliant partnership of 195 runs, lifting India to 284 for 3 by the 39th over. Yet, the team only managed to score 74 runs in the last 11 overs, leaving them far short of what they could have achieved.

Missing Opportunities

By the time India ended their innings at 358, there was a sense of disappointment. Rahul’s late-game push with two fours and a six felt more like a defense than an attack. They had a chance to set a higher target, but it was squandered. South Africa, on the other hand, capitalized on their closing moments by maintaining their momentum throughout the middle overs.

Even with Kohli and Gaikwad’s hundreds, India’s dependence on Rahul for acceleration in the final overs became apparent, especially with Hardik Pandya sidelined due to injury. Despite Jadeja’s 24 off 27 balls providing some steadiness, India lacked the team dynamic needed to put South Africa under pressure.

Rahul himself noted the need for better finishing should they desire to give bowlers a cushion to work with.

Searching for the Right Finisher

India’s ongoing hunt for a reliable finisher continues to cast a shadow over their performances. This absence was highlighted during the 2023 World Cup final when the innings faltered at a crucial moment. Rahul, who has been their most effective player in the death overs, is not ideally suited for the finisher’s role.

They lack players like David Miller or Charith Asalanka, who can bring that explosive energy at the end of innings. Hardik Pandya was once that answer, but injuries have made his presence uncertain. With the next World Cup in 2027 on the horizon, this need to build a new finishing lineup becomes urgent.

Players like Rinku Singh and Riyan Parag hold promise. Rinku shows the ability to hit from the start, and Parag’s growth suggests he could be a valuable asset. Without addressing these gaps, India may find their ambitions of winning future tournaments slipping away.

In conclusion, India must focus on crafting a robust finishing strategy, ensuring players like Rahul can return to their most effective positions while nurturing the next generation of finishers. Time is ticking, and innovative solutions are essential for success.
