Direct Primary Care: A Rising Alternative Sparking Debate in Healthcare

Exploring Direct Primary Care: A New Way to Access Healthcare

MILWAUKEE – Rising health insurance costs have led many to seek more affordable healthcare options. One emerging solution is called “Direct Primary Care.”

What is Direct Primary Care?

Direct Primary Care (DPC) offers a fresh approach to everyday healthcare expenses. Instead of relying on traditional insurance, patients pay a monthly fee to their doctor. This covers services like check-ups, blood tests, and routine medical care.

Dr. Anna Mirer, who has been in the medical field for nearly 20 years, emphasizes the freedom this model provides. “Having control over my practice allows me to spend more time with my patients,” she stated. In July 2024, she opened “Presence Primary Care” in Milwaukee, eager to offer the personalized care she believes every patient deserves.

The Patient Experience

DPC aims to improve the patient experience by eliminating the hassles of conventional insurance. Patients like Lauren Burke appreciate the benefits, noting that Dr. Mirer has helped her with both physical and mental health. DPC gives doctors like Dr. Mirer the opportunity to foster closer relationships with their patients.

However, not everyone is on board. The Blue Cross Blue Shield Association has raised concerns, stating that DPC may lack vital quality and safety measures. They argue that coordinated care is essential for ensuring patients receive effective treatment.

The Future of DPC

As discussions about DPC continue at the state level, there has been some bipartisan support for DPC plans that operate outside traditional insurance regulations. However, a proposed bill faced challenges due to stipulations regarding non-discrimination based on gender identity.

Despite these hurdles, Dr. Mirer is optimistic about the future of Direct Primary Care. “With rising insurance costs, more people are looking for alternatives,” she explained. In recent weeks, she has seen an increase in inquiries from potential patients.

As the landscape of healthcare evolves, DPC may be a promising alternative for those seeking more control over their medical care.
