Trump Hints at Possible India Visit, Praises Modi
On Thursday, U.S. President Donald Trump spoke highly of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and suggested that he might visit India next year. This discussion comes as both nations are involved in ongoing trade negotiations.
During a White House press briefing, where Trump announced a reduction in the prices of weight loss medications, he shared that his conversations with Modi have been productive. He emphasized his friendly relationship with the Prime Minister.
Trump stated, “He (PM Modi) has significantly reduced purchases from Russia, and he is a friend of mine. We communicate often. Prime Minister Modi is a great person, and I plan to visit.”
When reporters inquired about a trip to India next year, Trump replied, “It could be, yes.”
This statement follows trade talks between India and the United States, especially after the U.S. imposed steep tariffs on India’s purchases of Russian oil, including a 50% import duty.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt remarked earlier this week that the President feels positively about the India-U.S. relationship. She noted that Trump had communicated with Modi during Diwali celebrations held at the White House.
Trump had previously expressed that India is making commendable efforts in reducing its Russian oil imports, mentioning that Modi assured him of this commitment during his recent trip to Asia.
In response to Trump’s comments, India’s Ministry of External Affairs reiterated that the country’s decisions regarding energy imports are based on national interests. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal emphasized that protecting consumer interests is a priority for India in the current volatile energy market.
