Memorial Mural Defaced in Milan
A memorial mural honoring Shiri Bibas and her two young sons, Ariel and Kfir, was vandalized earlier this month in Milan. The mural remembers the Bibas family, who were tragically kidnapped and killed by Hamas terrorists during the attacks on October 7, 2023.
Created by artist AleXsandro Palombo, known for his impactful works, the mural highlights the loss of the Bibas family. Positioned outside the Qatari consulate, it aimed to stir conversations about values that Palombo believes are under threat.
Palombo expressed deep disappointment at the vandalism. He described it as a reflection of societal sickness, stating, “The fact that a mural dedicated to a murdered mother and her children can be defaced without public outrage signals political and cultural weakness.” He criticized factions within the political left for legitimizing extremist groups that promote hatred instead of peace.
The mural was altered by covering Shiri’s face with an image of a crying boy, along with the words “No War” stamped on it. Palombo denounced this act as a serious violation, saying it fails to respect the memory of the Bibas family and instead replaces their pain with a generic image.
The identity of the vandal remains unknown, but Palombo suggested that the act could be tied to a rise in antisemitism. He remarked, “This isn’t just an opinion; it’s an attack on memory and space, normalizing hatred through art.” He worries that such acts disguise themselves as activism while undermining the integrity of public memory.
This is not the first instance of Palombo’s art facing disrespect. Previous murals honoring Holocaust survivors have also been vandalized. Despite facing numerous antisemitic messages and threats himself, Palombo continues to assert that his art serves as a powerful testament to lost lives. He sees the potential for vandalism as a challenge yet believes that it only enhances the necessity of his work. “Every piece is a stronghold, a visual act of resistance,” he stated.
