Brahmaputra Valley Film Festival Delayed as Assam Grieves the Loss of Cultural Legend Zubeen Garg

In light of the recent passing of Assam’s beloved singer, Zubeen Garg, the organizers of the Brahmaputra Valley Film Festival (BVFF) have decided to postpone its 10th edition. The festival, which was set to take place from December 4 to 7, 2025, will now occur in 2026 as a mark of respect during this time of collective mourning.

The organizers shared, “With a heavy heart, we announce that the 10th edition of the Brahmaputra Valley Film Festival, planned for December 4-7, 2025, has been postponed to 2026. This decision comes as Assam grieves the loss of its cherished cultural icon, Zubeen Garg, whose influence spanned generations. BVFF stands in solidarity with the people and creative community.”

In their statement, they emphasized the festival’s deep connection to the culture and emotions of the region. They added, “It is only fitting that we pause our celebrations this year in memory and respect for Zubeen Garg. We appreciate the support and understanding from our filmmakers, partners, and audience. Refunds for all submissions will be processed soon.”

Zubeen Garg was more than just an artist; he was a source of pride for many in Assam. His passing in Singapore earlier this year has led to widespread sorrow and significant public outcry, especially regarding the circumstances of his death.

In response, authorities have moved quickly, arresting five people, including the festival organizer, Garg’s manager, and his relatives—including a police officer and his security staff—who are currently in judicial custody for 14 days.

Tensions escalated outside Baksa District Jail, where crowds gathered and reportedly clashed with police, resulting in stone-throwing and some vehicles being set on fire.

The decision to delay the festival highlights the deep impact of Zubeen Garg’s loss. The creative community is not just delaying an event; they are mourning a figure whose legacy extends well beyond his music. Further details regarding the new festival dates and submission refunds will be shared in the coming months.
