Beloved Bollywood Icon Sandhya Shantaram Dies at 94

The Indian film industry is grieving the loss of the legendary actress Sandhya Shantaram, who passed away at the age of 94. Known for her enchanting performances and significant contributions to cinema, she died on Saturday, October 4. Her last rites took place at Vaikunth Dham in Shivaji Park, Mumbai.

Though the family has not released official details about her passing, sources indicate that she died due to complications related to aging. Sandhya’s death signifies the end of an era, as she was one of the last representatives of the golden age of Hindi and Marathi films.

Many in the film industry and political circles have shared their condolences, remembering her impressive body of work. Filmmaker Madhur Bhandarkar expressed his sorrow on social media, stating how Sandhya’s iconic roles in films like Pinjra, Do Aankhen Barah Haath, Navrang, and Jhanak Jhanak Payal Baaje will always be remembered. He praised her talent and mesmerizing dance skills, which greatly impacted cinema.

BJP leader Ashish Shelar also honored her legacy, reflecting on her contributions to both Hindi and Marathi films. He remarked that her performances left a lasting impression on audiences, especially in films like Jhanak Jhanak Payal Baje, Do Aankhen Barah Haath, and Pinjra. His heartfelt tribute emphasized her unique talent and the role she played in the film industry.

Born as Vijaya Deshmukh on September 13, 1931, Sandhya flourished under the direction of her husband, the notable filmmaker V. Shantaram. Her incredible filmography includes timeless classics such as Amar Bhoopali (1951), Jhanak Jhanak Payal Baaje (1955), Do Aankhen Barah Haath (1958), Navrang (1959), and the revered Marathi film Pinjra (1972).

With her outstanding acting and captivating dance performances, Sandhya Shantaram carved out an essential place in Indian cinema, leaving behind an unforgettable legacy that will continue to inspire audiences for years to come.
