Putin Condemns Assassination of Charlie Kirk, Highlights U.S. Division
Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke out on Thursday about the recent assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, saying it reflects a significant divide in American society. He extended his condolences to Kirk’s family during a forum held by the Valdai Discussion Club in Sochi.
Putin described the murder as a “disgusting atrocity,” emphasizing its chilling nature since it was broadcast live. He stated, “What happened illustrates a deep division within society. In the U.S., there is no need to escalate tensions further, as the political leadership aims to restore order within the country.”
Kirk was fatally shot in September while speaking at Utah Valley University. His accused killer, Tyler Robinson, faces multiple serious charges, including aggravated homicide, which could lead to the death penalty. Robinson is scheduled to appear in court again on October 30, with prosecutors claiming substantial evidence against him.
The assassination has sparked renewed discussions about political violence in the U.S. Republican leaders have called on Democrats to be more considerate in their language towards groups like Trump supporters, fostering tolerance for differing opinions.
In addition to addressing the circumstances of Kirk’s death, Putin also responded to recent remarks made by former President Trump, who referred to Russia as a “paper tiger.” Putin challenged this characterization, remarking, “If we are successfully confronting the entire NATO bloc, and are still called a paper tiger, then what does that say about NATO?”
Last week, Trump had predicted that Ukraine might regain all of its territory from Russia and labeled Moscow as a “paper tiger.”
