Pope Offers Prayers for Charlie Kirk Amid Rising Concerns Over Violence
Pope Leo XIV met with Brian Burch, the new U.S. ambassador to the Holy See, and expressed his prayers for Charlie Kirk and his family following Kirk’s tragic death in Utah last week. The Vatican shared this message, emphasizing the Pope’s worry about increasing political violence and the importance of fostering dialogue instead of division.
During their first meeting on Saturday, the Pope conveyed his thoughts on Kirk, a well-known conservative activist and co-founder of Turning Point USA, who was fatally shot at Utah Valley University on September 10. Despite being rushed to a hospital, Kirk could not be saved.
The suspect, 22-year-old Tyler Robinson, was arrested after a family intervention ended a two-day search. He is now facing charges of aggravated murder in connection to the incident.
In the wake of Kirk’s death, a pub in London dedicated a room in his honor, inviting patrons to celebrate free speech.
This isn’t the first time the Pope has addressed gun violence, as he previously sent condolences after a shooting at Annunciation Catholic Church in Minnesota that resulted in the loss of two children and injured several others.
Although he has sent messages of support in similar situations, the Pope did not issue a statement regarding Kirk’s assassination.
During Burch’s reception in Rome, he remarked on the significance of the occasion, highlighting that the Pope identifies as a global leader, not just an American one.
