Israel Starts New Offensive in Gaza City

Israel has begun a new ground operation in Gaza City, urging residents to evacuate southward. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced that the offensive began on Tuesday and aims to gain stricter control over the city, which is the largest in the Palestinian territory.

This operation follows weeks of Israeli military actions in southern and central Gaza, known as Operation Gideon’s Chariots. The IDF reported that its forces are working to dismantle Hamas’s positions to prepare for further movements into Gaza City.

Reports state that the Israeli air force focused on over 850 targets in Gaza City last week, claiming to have killed hundreds of Hamas fighters and damaging infrastructure to facilitate the ground operation. An unnamed military official informed the Associated Press that around 2,000 to 3,000 Hamas militants remain in Gaza City, alongside a network of tunnels.

Escalation of Conflict

The ongoing offensive marks a significant escalation in the Israel-Palestine conflict, with hopes for a ceasefire fading as diplomatic efforts continue. Residents in Gaza City have reported heavy bombardment, with medical officials at Shifa Hospital confirming the arrival of 34 victims from the strikes, along with many others wounded.

Dr. Mohamed Abu Selmiyah, director of Shifa Hospital, described the situation: “The bombing did not stop for a single moment.” The Israeli military spokesperson warned that Gaza City is now a “dangerous combat zone,” urging residents to leave quickly for their safety.

About 350,000 people have reportedly fled from Gaza City, representing nearly one-third of its population before the offensive began. Reports also indicate long lines of traffic as people evacuate, carrying their belongings.

The IDF has mobilized several divisions for this expanded ground operation, which they are calling “Gideon’s Chariots II.” Troops from various divisions are now involved in the operation as they push deeper into Gaza.

International Response

In response to the situation, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has met with Qatari leaders in Doha to discuss efforts to end the conflict in Gaza and secure the release of hostages. Rubio reaffirmed the strong ties between the U.S. and Qatar, expressing appreciation for their diplomatic efforts.

The situation remains tense, and many hope for a resolution to the ongoing conflict.
