Indian Communities Worldwide Celebrate Ganesh Chaturthi

Hyderabad: Indian communities across the globe, from Melbourne to Dubai and New Jersey, are joyfully celebrating Ganesh Chaturthi, infusing their gatherings with warmth and devotion.

In Melbourne, the event has grown significantly thanks to the efforts of Dilse Australia, which took on a leading role in organizing the festivities starting in 2023. With over 370,000 people of Indian origin in Victoria, the festival has become a prominent community celebration. “We strive to bring the essence of our homeland to life here. This celebration is as much about honoring our traditions as it is about fostering our culture in a new environment,” shared Harsha Reddy Mangammola, the founder of Dilse Australia. Local artisans from Karnataka have hand-crafted idols, symbolizing the blend of traditional roots and their new home.

Similarly, in Dubai, the celebration of Ganesh Chaturthi has transformed from a minor gathering into a grand community festival. With many in the substantial Indian community sourcing idols from India, cultural programs around the rituals have become commonplace. A long-time Telugu resident of Bur Dubai remarked, “For many years, we only got to see photos from back home. Now, with our community growing stronger, celebrating here feels like home—it’s like Mumbai in the Gulf.”

Over in the United States, cities like New Jersey, California, and Texas are bustling with activity as temples and community groups host thousands of devotees for prayers and rituals. “Growing up, Ganesh Chaturthi was a significant event for us. Now, seeing the younger generation of Indian-Americans participating and singing familiar bhajans brings a strong sense of connection despite the miles between us,” said Geeta Reddy, a long-time resident of New Jersey.

As communities unite in these celebrations, the spirit of Ganesh Chaturthi continues to strengthen bonds and keep cultural heritage alive around the world.
