Modi Convenes with Putin and Xi Amidst Trump’s 50% Tariff Showdown with India

Modi Meets with Putin, Xi Amid U.S. Tariff Tensions

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi engaged in cordial discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping on Monday, indicating a shift in India’s diplomatic approach following the recent imposition of heavy tariffs by the U.S. against India.

The meetings took place in Tianjin, China, during a gathering of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), which aims to strengthen cooperation among its members as a counter to U.S. and NATO influence. During the event, Modi was seen sharing warm moments with both leaders, underscoring India’s intention to be seen as a partner to China, rather than a competitor.

This trip marked Modi’s first visit to China in seven years, during which he also enjoyed a ride in Putin’s official vehicle, similar to Putin’s meeting with former President Trump in Alaska last month. Modi later commented on his social media, stating, “Conversations with him (Putin) are always insightful,” sharing a photo of their meeting.

U.S.-Russia Relations Under Strain

While Modi did not explicitly criticize the U.S. or President Trump, his friendly gestures toward U.S. rivals reflect India’s response to the tariff disputes with Washington. The U.S. recently introduced a steep 50% tariff on Indian exports. Xi, while not naming the U.S., condemned “bullying behavior” in his address at the summit.

Reacting to the trilateral discussions, Trump highlighted that India stands to lose more in a trade battle with the U.S., asserting that India relies heavily on the American market. He noted, “What few people understand is that we do very little business with India, but they do a tremendous amount of business with us.”

Growing Connections with Russia and China

The meetings with Putin and Xi highlight the declining warmth between India and the U.S. Recent engagements include visits from India’s national security advisor to Moscow and meetings between foreign ministers from both countries. Putin has also expressed a desire to host Modi again in Moscow within the year.

This ongoing shift in diplomatic ties suggests that India is seeking to broaden its partnerships beyond traditional allies, adapting to the current geopolitical landscape.
