Kerala Aims for Football Showdown with Argentina
Kerala’s Sports Minister V. Abdurahiman recently shared exciting news about plans to host a well-known football team for a friendly match against Argentina in India later this year. This friendly, scheduled between November 10 and 18, is highly anticipated after the Argentina Football Association announced it.
While the opponent for Argentina has yet to be confirmed, Abdurahiman noted that several football teams have shown interest in this match-up, including Australia. “We are looking to pick a team from the top 50 FIFA ranks,” he told reporters. “The Australian team is keen, and we have a sports exchange agreement with them. Other teams have reached out to us as well.”
Originally, the Argentina Football Association planned to hold this friendly in 2026, but Kerala’s government requested it be moved to October or November of this year. The minister expressed pleasure at the change, stating, “We want to bring the Argentine squad that won the 2022 World Cup to Kerala.”
Abdurahiman emphasized that a lot of effort has gone into securing the match, and planning is underway. Discussions about venue arrangements will soon be held with the Chief Minister, reflecting the enthusiasm among football fans in the region. “Thousands of fans are looking forward to seeing Messi play live in Kerala,” he said.
In what could be a thrilling rematch, if Argentina faces Australia in Kerala, it will echo their FIFA World Cup clash in 2022. In that match, Messi showcased his remarkable skills, leading Argentina to victory and helping them advance to the quarter-finals.
Messi’s performance was widely praised, with former Manchester United player Rio Ferdinand calling it one of the best individual displays of the tournament, ultimately leading Argentina to win the championship against France.
This upcoming match promises to be a memorable event for sports fans in Kerala and beyond.
