Sunil Gavaskar Asks Fans to Support Team India Ahead of Asia Cup 2025
Former Indian cricket captain Sunil Gavaskar has called on fans and critics to refrain from blaming players as they gear up for the Asia Cup 2025, which kicks off on September 9.
There are discussions around whether India should have opted out of the tournament due to ongoing tensions with Pakistan. Matches between these two teams are now limited to ICC events or regional competitions like the Asia Cup. Recent tensions have increased after a terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, resulted in the deaths of several tourists, leading to further scrutiny of India’s decision to take part in the tournament.
In an interview, Gavaskar emphasized that players are not responsible for these decisions; they simply follow directions from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the Indian government.
“If the government makes a decision, there’s no reason for players to face criticism. They are contracted to the BCCI and must adhere to government instructions,” he stated.
Gavaskar mentioned that if the government decides India should participate, then the players will follow suit. Conversely, if the government advises against participation, the BCCI will take appropriate action.
When asked if India could withdraw from a match against Pakistan or the tournament itself, Gavaskar noted that ultimately, such decisions lie with the government.
“It all boils down to what the government of India directs the BCCI to do,” he mentioned.
On a brighter note, Gavaskar praised the Indian team selected for the tournament, calling it one of the strongest line-ups in years.
“This is an excellent squad. It boasts depth in batting, a mix of left and right-handed players, and great balance in bowling. It’s an impressive team,” he said.
India is set to begin their Asia Cup campaign against the United Arab Emirates on September 10.
