China and India Seek to Mend Ties Amid Border Talks

BEIJING – China and India are gearing up for important diplomatic discussions aimed at resolving their border disputes and strengthening relations. Foreign Minister Wang Yi will kick off a three-day visit to India on Monday, marking his first trip in over three years.

Wang, who also serves as China’s special representative for the boundary talks, will work alongside Indian National Security Advisor Ajit Doval to co-chair the 24th round of discussions concerning their ongoing border issues. This meeting is particularly significant as it follows the 2020 border clashes that severely strained relations between the two countries. The last round of talks, held in Beijing in December, saw both sides agree on six key points to foster negotiations and improve border management and cooperation.

Reports suggest that during this upcoming dialogue, the focus may be on reducing troop presence in contested border areas. This move would be a crucial step toward rebuilding trust between China and India.

Since a meeting in Kazan, Russia, last October, both nations have maintained consistent communication at multiple levels, taking gradual steps to stabilize their relationship. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian stated that China is committed to working with India to implement the common agreements reached by their leaders, aim for high-level exchanges, and enhance mutual trust and cooperation.

This year marks the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries. In recent months, officials from both sides have engaged in discussions, including meetings between Wang and Doval in June and with Indian External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar in July. Both countries expressed a desire to leverage this anniversary to deepen collaboration and maintain peace in border regions.

Progress has also been seen in areas such as trade and cultural exchanges. India’s Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson, Randhir Jaiswal, announced efforts to resume trade through three designated border points. Furthermore, there are plans to restore direct flight connections that were halted due to the COVID-19 pandemic, with an official announcement expected during the upcoming Shanghai Cooperation Organization Summit in Tianjin.

On the cultural front, China has recently reopened its borders to Indian pilgrims visiting the Xizang autonomous region, while India resumed issuing tourist visas to Chinese citizens in July.

Wang’s visit comes at a time when Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to attend the SCO Summit later this month. This arrival follows increasing economic pressures from the United States, which has imposed heavy tariffs on Indian goods.

Experts believe that both China and India should take this opportunity to enhance their relationship by working together in multilateral settings like the SCO, which could benefit cooperation among developing nations.

Lin Minwang, a professor at Fudan University, remarked that the upcoming high-level talks reflect a positive shift in China-India relations. He believes that easing border tensions could open doors for renewed cooperation in trade, investment, and cultural areas.

“India’s growing role in international cooperation and its demographic strengths make it essential for both countries to promote healthy bilateral ties, which have broader global implications,” Lin added.

However, experts caution that uncertainties still exist, emphasizing the need for both nations to strengthen collaboration on bilateral and international platforms for long-term, constructive relations.
