Asia Cup: Rinku Singh’s Future in Jeopardy as Selectors Make Tough Decisions

India’s Squad Selection for Asia Cup T20: Key Decisions Ahead

The Indian cricket team is set to announce its squad for the Asia Cup T20 on Tuesday, and selection head Ajit Agarkar faces some tough decisions. With several contenders vying for spots, the panel will need to make some hard choices.

One of the main discussions revolves around Shubman Gill, the Indian Test captain, and whether he will secure his place in the squad. Another player under the spotlight is Rinku Singh, who is being considered for the 15-member lineup.

Rinku gained fame a few years ago for hitting five successive sixes in an IPL match against Yash Dayal, helping the Kolkata Knight Riders clinch a nail-biting victory. Since then, he has been seen as a potential finisher for the national team. However, his recent performance has raised concerns. After missing out on a spot in the T20 World Cup (he was a standby), his 2024 IPL season was quiet, with only 113 balls faced, followed by a similarly low-key 2025 season, where he batted for just 134 balls.

Last year, Rinku’s coach at KKR was Gautam Gambhir, who seemed to limit his role in the team. Given the competition for batting positions, Rinku’s selection for the T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka next year isn’t guaranteed. His situation is precarious, especially with the Asia Cup approaching.

Assuming all players are fit, the top five lineup appears to include Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson (batter-keeper), Tilak Varma, captain Surya Kumar Yadav, and Hardik Pandya. With both Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal re-entering the mix, the selectors will need to make compromises about the roster.

Many discussions have arisen about who should be excluded to make room for these skilled players. A former national selector pointed out that it’s challenging to accommodate everyone, especially with Shreyas Iyer’s impressive record of 600 runs at a strike rate of 180. The selector emphasized that it’s difficult to alter the current top order to fit in Shubman while also considering Rinku’s uncertain position.

Interestingly, if Rinku’s spot is open, players like Shivam Dube and Jitesh Sharma could fill that finisher role. Both bring additional skills to the table, with Jitesh being a keeper and Shivam able to bowl as needed.

In light of Gambhir’s approach, where versatility in the squad is key, Rinku’s future in the team remains uncertain. As the announcement approaches, all eyes will be on the final selections.
