Arsenal’s Arteta Backs Odegaard as Captain Amid Adams’ Suggestions for Rice

Arsenal’s manager, Mikel Arteta, has come to the defense of Martin Odegaard’s role as team captain, following comments from club legend Tony Adams. Adams, who famously captained Arsenal, believes that Declan Rice should take over the captaincy, citing Rice’s strong performances last season.

Rice, an England midfielder, played a crucial role in Arsenal’s impressive run in the Champions League, including scoring two remarkable free-kicks against Real Madrid that helped the team advance in the knockout stages. Adams suggested that having Rice as captain could relieve some pressure from Odegaard and allow him to focus more on his game.

In an interview with the Irish Independent, Adams expressed, “He’s got a really big call to make this year, and for me, he hasn’t done it — the call is to make Declan Rice the captain. Declan is my kind of captain, and it might free up Martin Odegaard to play with more freedom.”

However, Arteta quickly reaffirmed his trust in Odegaard, explaining that the decision regarding the captaincy was made together with the team. He revealed that the players overwhelmingly supported Odegaard as their captain.

“It’s not just my opinion,” Arteta mentioned ahead of Arsenal’s upcoming Premier League match against Manchester United. “I asked the players to vote on the captain, and the results were clear — everyone chose Martin Odegaard. That’s the clearest sign you can have.”

Arteta emphasized that the players’ feelings about their captain are essential to achieve the team’s goals.

Looking ahead, Arteta remains optimistic about Arsenal’s chances for success. Despite finishing as runners-up for the past three seasons, he believes that the club’s time to shine will come. Arsenal has not lifted the Premier League trophy since the 2003-04 season, but Arteta is determined.

“You keep digging, digging, digging,” he stated. “For three seasons, we’ve had more points than any other team in this league, which is incredible. Now, our goal is to get one more point than everyone else.”

The team and fans alike will be hoping for a successful season ahead.
