Viral Discipline Method Sparks Debate Among Parents

Katie and Dustin Maletich, a couple from Oregon with four children, have found themselves at the center of a discussion on parenting after a video of a unique discipline method went viral.

The incident started when Dustin’s 9-year-old stepson, Tommy, casually told his mother to “chill.” In response, he was asked to do push-ups and squats as a consequence for his disrespect. During this time, Dustin took the opportunity to discuss the importance of respectful communication, and Tommy listened, eventually apologizing to his mom.

After the discipline, Dustin expressed his love for Tommy with a hug, highlighting a supportive family dynamic. While some viewers praised this approach to discipline, others raised concerns about using physical exercise as punishment.

Dr. Dyan Hes, a pediatrician from New York, criticized the method, calling it a “ridiculous punishment.” She pointed out that pushing a child to do 60 squats may be painful and emphasized that exercise should be associated with positive feelings rather than negative ones.

In contrast, educational psychologist Dr. Michele Borba agreed that the stepfather’s calm response was a positive way to handle the situation. However, she warned about the potential emotional impact of posting such moments online, suggesting it might lead to public shaming.

In an interview, the Maletich family explained that they do not typically use fitness as punishment but rather as a tool to teach self-control and emotional awareness. Katie shared that their approach isn’t about punishing for bad behavior but about helping kids find better ways to express their feelings.

Dustin remarked that learning to control one’s actions through physical activity can be beneficial. He drew parallels to adult life, stating that there are times when expressing frustration isn’t appropriate.

Their 13-year-old daughter also participates in this approach—she prefers to jog on the treadmill when feeling overwhelmed before discussing her emotions with her parents.

Katie mentioned that working out is generally enjoyable for their kids and has become a positive bonding experience for the family. They view it as a way to help their children become happier and less frustrated.

The Maletichs believe each discipline technique can differ based on the child’s needs, emphasizing that thoughtful responses are crucial in parenting. They aim to prepare their children for adulthood rather than simply seeking to make them comfortable in the moment.

In response to criticism about the viral video, the couple said they had asked Tommy for his consent before sharing, and he was excited about the attention it received.

Overall, Katie highlighted that the key to their discipline method is to ensure that it ends with a connection and understanding, making the lesson clear and beneficial for their children.
