India Sets Record Against South Africa, But Falls Short in T20 Series
In an exciting match on Wednesday, India posted their highest-ever total against South Africa in women’s T20 cricket, reaching 192 runs for 4 wickets. Despite this impressive score, they faced a devastating nine-wicket loss as South Africa, led by captain Laura Wolvaardt, chased down the target with ease.
With this victory, South Africa secured an unassailable 3-0 lead in the five-match series, making the upcoming games in Johannesburg and Benoni less significant.
Match Highlights
India chose to bat first, with skipper Harmanpreet Kaur and opener Shafali Verma delivering solid performances, scoring 66 and 64 runs, respectively. This marked a significant improvement from their previous outings in the series, where they struggled to get runs.
However, Wolvaardt’s explosive innings of 115 off just 53 balls, alongside Sune Luus’s impressive 64 not out from 42 balls, allowed South Africa to achieve their target of 193 runs in just 16.3 overs, sealing the series victory.
Wolvaardt was in exceptional form, having scored 51 and 54 in the previous matches. She hit 14 boundaries and five sixes, dominating the Indian bowling attack. Luus also contributed significantly, recording six fours and two sixes.
Together, they formed a formidable opening partnership, amassing 183 runs before Wolvaardt was dismissed in the 16th over.
On the Indian side, veteran all-rounder Deepti Sharma continued her search for form, going wicketless with figures of 0/46 in 3.3 overs.
Earlier in the innings, Harmanpreet Kaur’s 66 came off 38 balls, featuring seven boundaries and three sixes, marking her first half-century of the series. Shafali Verma, on the other hand, showcased her consistency with a second consecutive half-century.
Their opening partnership set a positive tone, as they added 68 runs with Smriti Mandhana, who scored 37 off 25 balls. Unfortunately, the match turned in the ninth over when Mandhana and Jemimah Rodrigues went out in successive deliveries, disrupting India’s progress.
Harmanpreet’s innings ended in dramatic fashion as she was run out on the final ball of the innings. Richa Ghosh remained not out at 18 off 10 balls.
In summary, India’s final score read 192 for 4, with Shafali and Harmanpreet standing out with their performances. South Africa’s response was strong and decisive, leading them to a comfortable win with 193 for 1.
Brief Scores:
- India: 192 for 4 in 20 overs (Shafali Verma 64, Harmanpreet Kaur 66; Nonkululeko Mlaba 2/31)
- South Africa: 193 for 1 in 16.3 overs (Laura Wolvaardt 115, Sune Luus 64 not out; Shreyanka Patil 1/30)
