Bill Gates Shares Thoughts on Trump’s Tax Law and Climate Tech
Bill Gates, the co-founder of Microsoft and a prominent supporter of clean climate technology, has voiced his views on the recent tax law enacted during the Trump administration. This law, known as the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act,” has drastically reduced climate incentives in the United States. Despite this setback, Gates remains hopeful about the future of climate technology.
In a conversation with Cipher News, Gates explained that while the new law significantly cuts federal support for established technologies like wind and solar energy, the negative impact isn’t as severe as it could have been. He explained, “It wasn’t quite the evisceration that a complete lack of believing in climate change might have led to.” While the government’s view on climate change seems dismissive, Gates noted that the global demand for clean tech continues to be strong.
A Bright Side to the Cuts
Gates pointed out that many important tax credits for newer technologies, such as geothermal, nuclear fission, and fusion, have been preserved. He believes this is a positive aspect of the legislation that could help mitigate further damage. “The fact that it retained tax credits for newer technologies shows that things could have been worse,” he remarked.
Focus on Health and Climate Advocacy
Regarding Breakthrough Energy, his climate innovation company, Gates announced a change in funding strategy. He has decided to reduce spending on clean energy advocacy. Instead, his attention is shifting toward global health issues, which he sees as urgent. Gates clarified, “If I see that that story is not being told well, I’ll jump in,” emphasizing his commitment to fight for climate tech when it’s crucial.
Exciting Developments in Nuclear Power
In discussing TerraPower, the advanced nuclear power company he started, Gates mentioned the rising demand from data centers powered by artificial intelligence. This demand could play a significant role in the future of his company. He stated that any growth in orders linked to AI could bolster TerraPower’s manufacturing efficiency.
With a proactive approach towards clean energy, Gates continues to navigate the challenges and opportunities in climate technology, ensuring that innovation remains at the forefront.
