Sri Lanka Coach Calls for Consistency After T20 Defeat to Bangladesh
Sri Lanka’s head coach, Sanath Jayasuriya, has emphasized the importance of consistency in performance following an upsetting loss to Bangladesh in the second T20I match of the ongoing home series. Despite winning the Test and ODI series, the team faced a tough challenge in Dambulla, falling short by 83 runs while attempting to chase down a target of 178 runs.
Jayasuriya responded to questions about pressure on the team, stating, “It’s not pressure as such. We simply need to play well. We have already won the Test and ODI series, and it’s important for us to finish the T20s on a high note. The players are keen to do well, and we’re putting in the effort.”
At 56, Jayasuriya highlighted the need for a strong start from the top-order batsmen. He said, “The top three need to perform well and stick around. Our bowlers are experienced and understand their roles. We have skilled players, and once they get going, they need to build on that.”
Despite the disappointing performance in the second T20I, Jayasuriya remained hopeful about the team’s ability to rebound. “I don’t want to feel pressured all the time; it’s too much to handle. It’s a part of cricket to face challenges. We made mistakes in the last match, and now we need to come back stronger. It’s straightforward,” he noted.
He also mentioned that the players were aware of their mistakes. “The team knows where we fell short. The faith of our cricket-loving fans is vital, and we believe everyone understands their responsibilities. I’m hopeful they’ll handle the pressure well,” he added.
Sri Lanka’s attempt to chase down 178 runs against their rivals Bangladesh fell apart quickly, with the top order crumbling under pressure. Only opener Pathum Nissanka managed to score in double figures among the first five batsmen.
Jayasuriya candidly addressed the issues within the batting lineup, saying, “In the second T20, our chase didn’t go well. One of the top three needs to bat through at least 15 overs, which didn’t happen. Overall, we need greater consistency from our batting unit, and that’s what we’ve communicated to the players. They know what’s expected of them across all areas of the game.”
