Test Cricket Remains Pat Cummins’ Top Focus Despite Demands of the Game

In a recent exchange with the Sydney Morning Herald, Pat Cummins, the stalwart captain of SunRisers Hyderabad, voiced his thoughts on the freshly minted rules of the Indian Premier League. When probed about the controversial stipulation that could see players face a two-year ban for opting out after being auctioned, Cummins candidly admitted, “Honestly, it’s not something that’s on my radar, given that I’ve never backed out of an auction before.”

This year, the Board of Control for Cricket in India has woven a tapestry of new regulations into the auction framework, one of which stipulates that any overseas player failing to register for a mega-auction will also be barred from participating the following year. A significant alteration to the traditional auction dynamic, it certainly raises eyebrows and sparks debate.

Cummins acknowledged the complexities these new rules introduce, recognizing them as a formidable challenge. “Test cricket alongside ICC tournaments for Australia sits at the apex of my priorities,” he declared, emphasizing the weight he places on the longer formats of the game. “As the season unfolds, I’ll navigate how everything fits together. Sure, there’s been a shift in regulations, but I’m unsure if they would have impacted my decisions previously—I haven’t withdrawn post-auction. Nevertheless, it’s another element to ponder when it comes to the IPL. Test cricket remains the supreme priority, World Cups are crucial, and everything else should align in harmony around those pillars,” Cummins elaborated.

Leading SRH to the finals in the 2024 season, Cummins has imbued the franchise with a bold, aggressive batting ethos, fundamentally transforming their identity on the pitch. His acquisition during the 2023 auction was nothing short of spectacular, with a staggering price tag of Rs 20.50 crore—marking it as the second-highest transfer amount in IPL history. An electrifying bidding war ensued among SRH, Chennai Super Kings, and Royal Challengers Bengaluru, culminating in a monumental payday for the Australian icon.
