Austria Celebrates World Cup Return with Victory Over Jordan
In a thrilling match on Tuesday, Austria marked their return to the World Cup with a 3-1 win against Jordan, who were making their debut in the tournament. The game, part of Group J, saw Austria’s substitute Marko Arnautovic play a key role in securing the victory.
On a cool evening in the San Francisco Bay Area, Austria struck first with a powerful shot from Romano Schmid in the 21st minute. Despite this early lead, Jordan fought back after halftime, with Ali Olwan scoring a stunning equalizer just five minutes into the second half.
The introduction of Arnautovic at halftime proved pivotal for Austria. He initially had a goal disallowed in the 69th minute but soon forced defender Yazan Al Arab into scoring an own goal seven minutes later. To seal the win, Arnautovic successfully converted a penalty deep into stoppage time.
Austria midfielder Konrad Laimer acknowledged the challenges posed by their opponents, saying, “We knew this match would be tough… there were times we played well and others where we struggled. What mattered was our team spirit; we never gave up and continued fighting until the end.”
Jordan, defending admirably and attacking swiftly, kept the pressure on Austria, especially with the speed of forwards Olwan and Mousa Al-Tamari posing a constant threat. This match was particularly significant for Austria, as it was their first World Cup appearance in 28 years.
The game began at a fast pace, with Jordan almost finding the net in the second minute when captain Ehsan Haddad’s shot narrowly missed. Austria soon settled down, with Marcel Sabitzer leading a series of attacks. They broke the deadlock when Schmid’s stunning long-range shot found the top corner.
After equalizing, Jordan relentlessly pushed for another goal. However, Austria regained the lead when a corner kick resulted in an own goal by Al Arab. Arnautovic then confirmed the victory with his late penalty.
Reflecting on the match, Jordan’s Olwan said, “We didn’t deserve to lose in our first-ever World Cup appearance. It’s a historic moment for us. We have two more matches to play, and I’m confident we can still qualify.”
With this win, Austria looks to build momentum as they continue their World Cup journey, while Jordan remains determined to make their mark in the tournament.
