Shubman Gill Shines as New Indian Captain with Stellar Century in Leeds

Shubman Gill, the newly appointed captain of the Indian Test team, put on a spectacular performance in Leeds, scoring a brilliant century in his first overseas match. The young batsman scored an impressive 127 runs off 175 balls, helping India finish Day 1 of the first Test with a strong total of 359 for 3 on June 20.

Former cricketer Yuvraj Singh took to social media platform X to congratulate Gill, highlighting how his success seems destined. He praised Gill for understanding the weight of captaincy while letting his batting speak for itself. "Some things are clearly written in the stars. Congratulations @ShubmanGill on your first overseas century as Test captain. You’ve let your bat do all the talking. Well done and here’s to many more!" Yuvraj shared.

Wasim Jaffer also commended Gill’s performance, noting the significance of the century for the young captain. "New skipper, new series—what a way to start! A very important hundred in Gill’s career. Well played skipper @ShubmanGill," he tweeted.

Irfan Pathan, another cricketing legend, remarked on the electrifying atmosphere at Headingley, describing Gill’s inning as a masterclass filled with style and skill. "A full house at Headingley witnessed a Shubman Gill masterclass—a hundred full of flair and finesse," he said.

Gill’s Journey on Day 1 at Headingley

Gill entered the match just after lunch, facing a challenging situation as India had lost two quick wickets—KL Rahul and Sai Sudharsan—just before the break. Partnering with Yashasvi Jaiswal, Gill played aggressively, showcasing his wide range of shots.

Displaying remarkable composure, Gill reached his century in 140 balls, finishing with a boundary reminiscent of Virat Kohli’s signature style. His impressive performance made him the fifth Indian player to score a century on his debut as Test captain.

As the series progresses, all eyes will be on Gill to see how he continues to lead India in this important series.
